What Is The Best Country To Outsource To?

Randy RayessRandy Rayess

It is difficult to select a single country as the “best” place to outsource to as it depends on the specific project and each company’s preferences. Important criteria to consider are:

1. Your location
2. Your budget
3. The project you plan to outsource

Each country has both great and weak talent. Of course some countries have higher densities of great talent but a better question to ask is “where can I outsource efficiently for my budget?”

Currently, the three most popular regions (outside of the US) to outsource to are South America, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia (predominantly India). These regions are popular because they have large amounts of tech talent, adequate levels of English, and a lower cost of living than the United States.

If you are located in the United States and due to budget constraints would prefer to outsource to a firm outside of the US, then South America is useful because it is in the same time zone. This means there is a much larger overlap in working hours when compared with locations like Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia and therefore communication tends to be easier.

If you would like to have around the clock development and maintenance it is recommended to source talent in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. The timezones are approximately 7 to 12 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time which means the remote team will work during your night time.

If you have a very limited budget then Southeast Asia is a good place to begin your search as the lowest cost of living is in Southeast Asia. Note that you should not optimize for price, the key ratio to optimize for is (quality and experience)/price. A great developer can live comfortably in India with a lower salary than that same developer in the US but of course the experience of having a local developer is better due to the time zone difference and a better understanding of the local culture. Within India you also have a wide ranges of prices and quality, so making a decision purely based on price is incorrect as you will find that within each price range there is wide range of quality.

If you are located in the United Kingdom, then Eastern Europe could be a great fit for your remote team as the cost of living is lower and the time zone difference is minimal.

While there is no “best” country for outsourcing, remote talent can be evaluated based on development skill, fluency in English, timezone difference, remote work experience and price.
